One of the most striking finds from the Pictish fort in Burghead (alongside the famous ring) is a silver penny of the Anglo Saxon king Alfred the Great, pierced in two places.
The pierced holes, like other Saxon coins found in Moray, could be evidence it was used as a piece of jewellery or stitched into clothing for security. We have studied the coin and designed a replica die to hammer our own in 999 silver, just as the Saxon minters would have done over 1000 years ago. Excess silver is trimmed off and will be remelted and repurposed.
Finds such as this coin, a Trewhiddle style horn terminal and the ring which matches a mould fragment found at the Brough of Birsay in Orkney demonstrate an extensive trading network going on around Burghead.
The pendant comes with an optional free black cotton cord. We also have a separate listing with silver chains here if you desire.
All our packaging is 100% paper. No plastic at all.
Due to the weight of this pendant in silver it will not be hallmarked as standard. If you do desire hallmarking then please purchase the service here.
This service will take up to an additional two weeks. If you would like this in gold, please email for a quote.
