Based on a 7th-8th century Pictish brooch or "Cartait" based on a much smaller fragment from Frederick Links, Caithness.
Solid silver with either a ruby or a garnet set in the central terminal. Totally one of a kind brooch and fully hallmarked by Edinburgh Assay office.
